Macbeth

Immersive Theatre Production | 2017

Subverting the notion of the all-male casts of Shakespeare’s time, Macbeth features an all-female cast.

The audience is invited into the intimacy of the Macbeth and Macduff households. They even get to play with the Macduff children. The witches (11, not 3!) interact with the audience as waitresses, assassins, apparitions, and catwalk models. The show starts at a live fashion show.

Nothing about this production is typical or traditional theatre.

Macbeth is a modern interpretation, set in the UAE, where the cut-throat world of corporate politics replaces the Shakespearean regal politics.

The board members of the powerful Scotland Corp., a security and surveillance company, find themselves in a struggle for leadership, with Macbeth seizing control in a most unorthodox fashion.

This immersive, promenade theatre production, featuring a cast of 27 women, premiered at the Abu Dhabi National Theatre on 14 April 2017. The production further travelled to Alserkal Avenue in Dubai and the Ajman Cultural Centre. Each time, the setting was integrated into each location, giving each emirate a different experience of the same production.

Macbeth is produced by Constellation Productions in partnership with the UAE Ministry of Culture & Knowledge Development, with support from the British Council.

This is an associate event of the UK/UAE 2017: Year of Creative Collaboration.

“It is not everyday you get to play a psychopathic witch. Talking in rhymed speech, making bizarre potions, strutting on a catwalk, dancing like mad, killing in cold blood and scaring the bejeezus out of people. Us “weird sisters” were pure evil. The most fun part I have played in a while.”
