Amorphous
Video Art Installation | 2016
Take a plunge, through the rabbit hole, into the non-linear narrative of a mind unleashed as it wanders between wakefulness and a dream-like state.
The bed, a metaphor of the human condition, an intimate and personal space for quiet contemplation. Moving between reflection, confrontation and confidential disclosures, Amorphous is a place of physical and psychological experiences. Lines blur and shapes shift in unexpected ways.
Shereen and Swapna are Dubai based artists of Indian origin. Their common cultural roots and interest in performing and visual arts resulted in ‘Lumiere’ – a collective keen on creating illuminative, experimental and introspective dance-film projects. Their debut collaborative project <The Unmanifested>, showcased at SIKKA Art Fair 2014.
Amorphous, the duo’s second exploratory venture, is a video art installation commissioned by Dubai Culture for the Sikka Art Fair 2016.
The installation, consisting of a bed and a ceiling hung screen where the film was projected, invited visitors to lie down and immerse themselves in the experience.
“Beyond the film, we wanted to extend the surreal experience for visitors. So on some days I “performed” live. I dressed up and became the protagonist in the film, lying down on the mattress, watching herself in her own dreams. The “performance” received a mixed reaction from the audience – some were captivated and stood around the bed to watch, some others stood by the corridor and observed at a distance and then the third kind – people so spooked out that they didn’t even want to enter the room.”
