Yukta

A Mohiniyattam Presentation | 2017

Shereen Saif and Meera Krishnamurti live in two different parts of the world.  They meet through dance. Different as their backgrounds are, they find common ground in their values, aesthetics, and inspirations. And a deep love for Mohiniyattam, fuelled by their guru Dr.Neena Prasad.

Yukta is the manifestation of a desire to dance together in an informal, intimate, un-concert like format. The 60-min performance strings together choreographies from the Mohiniyattam repertoire along with a piece co-created by the dancers.

Yukta is as much about the joy of dance as it is about sharing space and finding invisible yet concrete connections. Through spatial exploration, the dancers attempt to extend beyond the self to touch one another and beyond.

“Yukta, meaning joined or united in Sanskrit, is not about showcasing a traditional Mohiniyattammargam. It is about sharing our joy in dance. It is about connecting more deeply as individuals and seeing if that connection can spill over to our dance as well.

The journey of Yukta has been natural. Things came together harmoniously. Since this is a duet, trying to synchronize our movements has been important but we also thought it was important to give space for our individual selves to be expressed.”
